Here we are at the Flughafen in Zurich getting ready for our Italy trip. (notice how we are still smiling and not sick of our huge backpacks yet!) We decided to just spend a day in Venice and didn't want to pay for a hotel there, so we took an overnight couchette from Zurich that left around 10:00pm. We didn't have quite as much room as we were expecting... We shared the train car with an interesting couple, they drank and fought until about 2 am and finally passed out. My mom was sleeping above the husband, and around 5 am when we were getting ready for our stop, she dropped a pen that fell clear down to the husband's bed. He sat up with a start trying to figure out what almost hit him. Instead of my mom saying sorry and telling him what happened, she decided to just sit there and pretend to be asleep so he wouldn't get mad... And then of course we had to find out what

actually fell and see how important it was to get back. It was a pen.

But we got it! We had to switch trains in Bologna, and only had about 20 minutes to make it. At least, we had 20 minutes before our train was 15 minutes late... So we had 5 minutes to get off the train, figure out what platform our next train was departing from and run! We teamed up with a mom and her 2 kids and took off running the second we stopped at the station. Luck was on our side and we only had to go about 5 tracks over, and we made it! We definitely cut it pretty close though. We got to Venice around 8am and dropped off our bags so we could explore. Walking out of the train station was amazing, as soon as you open the door you can see the water, huge bridges and tons of people. We decided to take a Vaparette around the city to see what the city had to offer. My mom had downloaded a few podcasts from Rick Steeves and one went along with the Vaparette ride, so it was like our own personal Venice tour for about 12 Euros each, it's a great deal! We ended up spending about 10 hours in Venice and that was the perfect amount of time.

Not sure if you're aware of this, but Venezuela means "Little Venice" in Spanish. Kind of like how plazuela means "Little Plaza".
That kind of info is sure to come in handy sometime.
I am definitely envious. It looks and sounds amazing.
HOW AMAZING!! I hope that some day I can make a trip like this.
